Voyager Ocean Passages
The Skipper
Voyager is owned and skippered by Captain Ed Mapes. Ed began sailing on the Great Lakes and Lake St. Clair, racing three nights a week and on weekends, doing deliveries, and sailing his own boats, including a wooden 15 foot sloop, Hunter 28.5, J-24, and Vagabond 42 (the first 'Voyager').
Ed has learned about seamanship and sail trim from his vast racing experience. Prestigious events have included many NOOD Regattas and club Championships, 13 Chicago and Port Huron to Mackinaw races with two firsts, a second and third place finishes. He has raced J-24's at Key West Race Week, and done the SORC in the Hobie 33's.

In the Etchells class, Ed has taken part in the Great Lakes and North American Championships, and done the North Americans in the Hobie 33 class. Ed has served in every position, from bowman, trimmer, navigator, stactician and skipper. He was helmsman on the Farr 50 Experience. | |
 | His true passions, however, are ocean passage making and helping others to elevate their sailing skills. After his first offshore passages in 1987, he began crewing on many offshore deliveries, and became a USCG Licensed Master in 1990. He has translated the vast knowledge gained on countless ocean deliveries and cruising passages into the Voyager Ocean Passages and Voyager Ocean Passage Seminars. |
His experience in making delivery yachts ready for the ocean was the basis for his book, 'Ready to Sail', which details the inspection process he developed to systematically examine a vessel prior to taking her to sea, and describing methods of repair for defects, with extensive information and insights on offshore sailing. The book concludes with discussions on safety gear and procedures, and vessel and crew preparations for sea. He is a certified sailing instructor with American Sailing Association, and answers questions on sail trim for the ASA "Forum" and contributes articles to its publication, "Bearings". Ed is the author of: Ready to Sail, Preparations for Offshore Sailing and Cruising, and Complete Guide to Offshore Passagemaking. His latest book, Further Offshore, will be released in the fall of 2007 by Sheridan House Publishers. His Seaworthy School of Sail offers classes from basic keelboat to Celestial Navigation and Offshore Passage Making. The Spinnaker Run is the school's signature class. It's a fast-paced course of instruction enabling sailors of all levels to bareboat charter or sail on a Voyager Ocean Passage. Ocean Passage making is a three-day ocean excursion designed to allow sailors to learn while they sail the ocean, gain experience, and decide if that's where they want to sail.
